A power transfer switch is a device designed to power a load from multiple voltage sources.
The Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) is a piece of equipment that automatically switches power requirements from your electric service provider to your home standby generator. In doing so, it also prevents electricity from flowing to service lines and accidentally injuring electric company workers.

The ATS switch comes in varying sizes depending on the power rating of your generator and how many amp circuits you wish to run on the switch.

The ATS mounts in close proximity to your electric panel box and should be installed by a licensed electrician only. Make sure the ATS switch is UL rated.

Thus, the Manual Transfer Switch is a piece of equipment that allows you to manually switch power requirements from your electric service provider to your home standby generator.

An Automatic Transfer Switch is used with standby generator systems whereas the manual transfer switch is usually used with portable generators.
