A generator is a device that creates electrical energy from mechanical energy. Portable generators for the home, also called engine-generators, combine a generator and an engine in a single, self-contained machine that uses batteries or a fuel, such as gasoline, to generate electricity. Energy generators are incredibly useful tools to have on hand during an emergency, and as technology has increased and prices have dropped, it has become increasingly common for homeowners to possess them as standard safety and emergency equipment.

Power Outages

Perhaps the best reason to own a portable generator is power outages. More than 3,000 power outages occur in the U.S. each year, and at least 41 million people are affected during them. Furthermore, the average power outage lasts approximately 221 minutes, which is potentially more than 3.5 hours without running water, air conditioning, refrigeration, phone services and so forth. Electricians in West Palm receive their highest volume of calls for generators during power outages, but this is of course the worst time to be in need because supply is low and demand is high.

Preventable Loss

The inconvenience and loss of property experienced during a power outage is entirely preventable through ownership of a generator. Although energy generators require a sometimes-significant upfront investment, the devices are very durable and usually pay for themselves quickly, particularly in an area like West Palm that is prone to severe weather and seasonal power outages. When the average homeowner considers just the food that they have lost over the years due to power outages, the cost of a portable generator becomes much more appealing.

Security Systems

The other important consideration is the critical systems that require power. The home security system, for example, requires constant power, and although it does have a battery backup, that battery may not last through a long-term outage. Many homeowners have moved away from traditional phone services to VoIP services, which means no 911 access during an outage, which can be a big problem when the smartphone battery goes dead. A generator keeps oxygen machines running, keeps the refrigerator refrigerating and it keeps the lights illuminating your home at night.

Home Generator

A home generator is a tremendous investment that costs a lot less long term than you might expect. A simple, portable system can cost just a few hundred dollars or less, and a full-power residential generator can transform the way you live during West Palm’s storm season. Modern generators are powerful, energy efficient, cost efficient and easy to use. Homeowners should strongly consider one before entering the next storm season.
