A business that saves money on overhead enjoys healthier net profits at the end of the year. Finding ways to save on that all-important budget often requires a look at the company’s electricity and utility bills. Sometimes, those bills can be lowered through projects like refurbishment of the company's offices or a change from traditional lighting to LED lighting.

LED dock light The Cost of Old Lights

Incredibly, the lights used every day in businesses all around the country constitute 40 percent of all the energy consumption by commercial enterprises in the U.S. each year. Experts suggest that significant savings in electricity bills are available with an update of the building's lighting to LED or T8 fluorescent lighting. Different companies may need different lighting solutions, and a professional electrical services company will be able to suggest the best way for a company to reduce lighting costs.

Power Bill Breakdown

The power that comes into the average home or business is used in a variety of ways for items like heating, cooling and lighting. Modern businesses also spend a lot of money on the electricity used to power electronics like computers and other business machines. The federal government reports around 12 percent of the average yearly energy bill goes to lighting. Switching to LED lighting could offer a dramatic reduction in power costs for the average business.

Efficiency of LED Lights

Many LED lights are six to seven times more efficient than incandescent lighting options. One of the reasons why the government decided to restrict the manufacture and sale of incandescent lights was because of the incredible inefficiency of the devices when compared to other lighting sources, like LED lights. Most of the energy that is fed into an incandescent light bulb is released as heat instead of providing illumination.

An incandescent bulb turns less than 10 percent of its energy into light. The rest is wasted as heat.

Choosing LED Over CFL

Many residential homes have transitioned to CFL lighting as a replacement for incandescent lighting, but for companies who want to make the most of their long-term investment, LED lights are supposed to last much longer than CFL bulbs. Although the initial cost of an LED bulb or lighting device might remain higher than CFL investment for the next few years, an LED bulb has the potential to last somewhere between 20 to 40 years. A CFL bulb might only last around six years.

Sturdy Lighting Options

LED bulbs might seem delicate and fragile. However, there are hardy versions of these lights that are appropriate for factory or manufacturing spaces. Using an LED dock light is the best way to illuminate a space with a powerful light while using much less power to do it than using something like a halogen bulb, which costs more in the long run. LED lights also create a safer environment for maintenance workers in busy commercial buildings because those bulbs must be replaced less often.

Modern Business and LED Lights

LED lights have been around for more than 50 years. However, it's only in the last few years that installing LED lights has become a cost-effective way to reduce business overhead costs. Not only do LED lights contain less mercury than incandescent lights, which is better for the environment, but under normal circumstances, they can last for years longer than traditional lights. Any business wishing to lower costs should consider installing new lighting.
